WHAT ARE VOLKSSPORTS?

VolksSporting is an exciting new concept in the United States that is an integral part of an international VolksSport movement devoted to physical fitness. These sports: walking, swimming, bicycling, and cross-country skiing, are commonly referred to as volksmarches, volksswims, etc. Their aim is to get people of all ages out-of-doors to exercise non-competitively in events where everyone who completes the event is declared a Winner. "Volkssport" is a German word that literally translated means "people's" or "popular" sports. The volksmarches are traditionally 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in length.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

Anyone can participate. VolksSporting is a family oriented activity. The participants set their own pace. Ample time is allowed for all to complete the event. Infants may be pushed in strollers or carried in back carriers. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Club membership is not a requirement for participation.

WHAT DOES IT COST TO PARTICIPATE?

Most walks are free to the public. Participants may enroll in the IVV Achievement Awards Program by purchasing IVV record books. There is a Distance Book where distance accumulated is recorded and an Event Book which records the number of events completed. Upon completion of specified milestones (10, 30, 50 etc events and/or 500, 1000, 1500 etc kilometers), the owner is entitled to a free certificate, hatpin, and patch. The books cost $5 and can be purchased at the events. Participants desiring credit pay $3 for each event. At some events, a commemerative award (medal, patch, etc) is available at an additional charge.

WHERE ARE VOLKSSPORTS HELD?

Currently, over thirty countries in North America, Europe, and Asia have clubs that hold weekend events and have permanent trails.  There are around 350 active clubs in the United States which host around 1700 permanent trails called Year Round Events.
