7/20 Meeting at Summit Station Eatery in Greensboro

The next club meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 20th, at The Summit Station Eatery located at 125 Summit Avenue, Greensboro.  It is the former "Solaris Restaurant" on the city walk route.  Dinner (optional) is at 6 PM and the meeting is at 7 PM.

To get there from Winston-Salem, go east on I-40 to US-68, take exit 210, and turn left.  Take a right on Market Street and go into the downtown.  Turn left on North Elm, then turn right at the 2nd cross street onto Summit Ave and restaurant will be on the left.

Another route from Winston would be to take Freeman Mill Road (exit 218, this is also the Hwy 220 south exit.  This is also the exit used for the direction to the YRE start point).  Northbound Freeman Mill merges into Edgeworth Street then right on Market to Elm. Turn left on Elm and at the 2nd cross street turn right onto Summit Ave and restaurant will be on the left.

For those coming westbound on I-40, take the Elm-Eugene exit (Exit 37 from I-40 or Bus-85), turn north toward the downtown, and follow Elm Street through the downtown to Summit Ave.  Turn right on Summit Ave. and restaurant will be on the left.  This is shorter to describe, but much longer to drive.

If you need directions from other approaches to Greensboro, call or e-mail Lloyd.

Walking with the Prez:

Hi All,

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, July 20th, at The Summit Station Eatery in Greensboro.  We ate there a few weeks ago and found that they had a wide selection at reasonable prices.  So we will give them a try. They have a loft that will accommodate up to 18 people.  Our last meeting was at The Olympic in Colfax with 10 members present.

We had a great turnout for our group walk at Gibson Park in High Point, with 16 total walkers. We started out the walk at 9 AM and decided to move it to 8 AM next year because of the heat.  The walk went towards PEC for a bit and then turned around and returned to the start point for a pit stop.  After everyone was serviced, the group went in the opposite direction.  It was decided to go this direction first next time because it has less tree coverage than the other half.

On  June 26th a picnic/walk was held at Salem Lake with 11 walkers attending.  It was really hot out that night, still in the 90's and so at the quarter way mark, half of the group turned back.         On July 10th the club had a walk on the Greensboro City trail with 11 walkers.  The day had been cooler than it had been previously in the week, so the walk went well with all opting for the 11-km option.

The next group walk will be at Burlington on July 24th at 8 am. We will also have group walks on August 7th at Boone and Blowing Rock.  The start times are 9 AM for Boone and 1 PM for Blowing Rock at Bass Lake parking lot.  It should be cooler up in the mountains so come up and join us.

We are in the process of making out next years walk schedule, so if you have a desire to walk someplace, let us know.  It is also time to renew our year-round-events, and they all have been submitted for approval. The walk in Elizabeth City now has new directions and maps in the box that will take you around the Riverside Avenue bridge that is being replaced.  The construction is supposed to be completed by Apr/May next year.  A contract has been awarded to remove the bridge in Elkin and should be gone by the end of the year.

It was announced that Nicole Rogers will be the next Executive Director of the American Volkssport Association after Jackie Wilson retires on August 31, 2010.

I want to thank all of the POCs that took the time and effort to remove the "+" slugs from the stamps for their walks.  All of the slugs in the local area have been done, not so for the outlying areas.  So, before you stamp make sure that the "+" has been removed.

Tater Tours is coming to our area in Sept to do our Winston-Salem and Greensboro walks.  The itinerary is still being worked on but they will be here during the week.  So if you don't have anything better to do, come walk with other walkers from someplace else and show our "southern hospitality".

Don Feagans has been on the mend and appearing now and then at our walks, good to see him making such good progress.  Please welcome new members Jean Marie and Tom Gallagher from Winston-Salem the next time you see them.

On a sad note, Loren & Margaret's son-in-law, Ryan, passed away on July 4th after an extended illness.  Please keep them and their family in your prayers.

See you on the trails or restaurants,

Lloyd

CLUB NEWS

SCHEDULE CHANGE:  We have changed our group walks in Boone and Blowing Rock from August 14th to August 7th.  The plan is still to do the Boone Greenway at 9 am and one of the Blowing Rock trails at 1 pm.  The change was made to have a get-together at a condo that some of their members will occupy on the new date.

ELKIN YRE:   An article in the Winston-Salem Journal reports that a contract has been awarded for the removal of the old bridge.  Removal should start sometime after 7/26 and be finished by the end of the year.  We will keep you informed of when the walk route will be altered.

PIEDMONT ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER YRE:  Winnie and I tried to do the walk on 7/5 starting at Gibson Park.  Gibson Park is now closed on Monday and Tuesday.  This does not prevent doing the walk from the PEC Building, but the restrooms and water at the turn around point are not available.  We drove to the PEC Building to do the walk, but it was not open when we got there and still closed when we finished the walk.  There is a registration log and stamp at the High Point Visitors Center.  It appears budget cuts are starting to hurt walk availability, so if you are planning to do a walk involving a local park or visitors center, it is advisable to call to see if hours have changed.

 ASHE COUNTY ON 7/17

The Asheville Amblers will hold a regular event on July 17th in West Jefferson, NC.  This provides Ashe County for those still doing the Tarheel 100 program.  For everyone else, it provides a walk in a new area and a chance to visit the mountains.

The walk start times are 8:30AM to 1PM with all walkers done by 4PM.  The walk has 6 and 10KM options and is rated at 2.  The start point is the Lower Pavilion in Bowie-Seagraves Park.

The trail will meander through a delightful, quaint town in the Appalachian Mountains.  You can visit Ashe County Cheese Company, a working cheese plant known for its sharp cheddar cheese and amazing selection of other cheeses and preserves.  See an old fashioned movie theater where movies are actually still shown, beautiful murals painted throughout the town and mosaics in the sidewalks.  Visit the Ashe Arts Center with its delightful exhibition by Ashe County younger artists.  Enjoy quiet, friendly neighborhoods and a restful cemetery with fantastic views. This walk qualifies for Ashe County for the "Tarheel 100" Program as well as American Historic Churches and Cemetery Special Programs.  You can enjoy a great slide as an optional start.

Also in the area to enjoy before or after the walk is St Mary's Church with three Ben Long frescoes and an auto tour of colorful quilts painted on barns in the area.  The night before  the event features two musical experiences, a typical Blue Grass free show in the park where the start point will be and then a concert "Gershwin by George" in the local auditorium.  Mt Jefferson State Park with a short lovely trail with great views is only a short drive away.

ANSON & UNION COUNTIES

Many walkers need Anson and Union Counties to complete their Tarheel 100 Program.  These will be available on September 18th when the Rowan Roamers hold a regular event in Wadesboro (Anson County) in the morning and the Metrolina Walkers hold their event in Marshville (Union County) in the afternoon.

The walk in Wadesboro has been laid out and sanctioned.  It will start in Wadesboro City Park on Gatewood Street and will feature a trail in the park, the historic downtown, and quiet residential areas.  Both 5 and 10 kilometer trails will be available.

The walk in Marshville has also been sanctioned.  Both 5 and 10 km routes are planned.  The walk will start at the Municipal Park Picnic Shelter, Park Dr., Marshville, NC.

The AVA Special Awards Programs that this event qualifies for are: Cemetery Stroll, Firehouses, Historic Churches, Honoring Law Enforcement, Hooray for Hollywood, Museums, Railroad Heritage, and Veteran Memorials.

More details will be provided as they become available.

TATER TOURS COMING IN SEPTEMBER

Tater Tours, which caters to Volksmarching walkers, will be coming to the Triad Area in mid-September, probably the 13th and 14th.   The bus load of walkers will be doing a number of our YRE walks in the Winston-Salem and Greensboro area.  This is a great chance to do our YREs with a large group.  When the exact schedule is known, it will be published.  Plan now to keep this time frame open and join the group.
