February 16th Meeting at Olympic Restaurant in Colfax

The next club meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 16th, at the Olympic Family Restaurant near Colfax.  The restaurant is on West Market Street about half way between Kernersville and Greensboro.  To get there, take I-40 to the Sandy Ridge Exit (Exit 208, Farmers Market Exit) and turn north to West Market.  At West Market, turn right (east) and the restaurant is about a quarter of a mile on the left.  For those not wanting to use the interstate, take West Market from Greensboro or East Mountain from Kernersville to West Market.  The restaurant has no street number but it is in the 8900 block and directly across the road from Boone Fabric at 8905 West Market.

Walking with the Prez:

Hi All,

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 16th, at The Olympic Restaurant in Colfax.  We have eaten there many times and have always gotten good service and good food quickly.  The weather has been playing havoc with our walking schedules, having to cancel our Hickory event.  We were going to look at the Alexander County walk in Taylorsville on the way home from the Hickory walk.  That was postponed to be after the Mocksville walk this past weekend but snow and ice this time for me.  The walk has been sanctioned, just not sure where the trail will take us.  Our Burlington walk only had 2 other walkers besides myself, and they were from Cary.  I hope that all of you who went on the Savannah trip enjoyed yourself,  I know that I have heard a lot of good comments on it.

Our 25th anniversary is approaching and there have been tentative plans made to celebrate it after the Bethabara walk on May 22.  So mark your calendar and stay tuned for more details as they become available.   Our next group walk will be on Feb 20th at High Point  10 AM.  The starting point will be open then so you don't have to find a rest stop before arriving.  The following Saturday we will be walking both Greensboro trails with the park walk in the morning starting at Tannenbaum Park at 10 AM.

Asheville Amblers will be celebrating their 30th Anniversary on Saturday, April 24th.  The walk doesn't start until 11 AM at Holmes Educational Forest,  where the walk and cake are free!  So drive on out and enjoy the other half of the state.

I want to send out "GET WELL" wishes to Delphine Johnston who is at Baptist Hospital recovering in the cardiac ICU.  I also want to send out a special thanks to Beth's Hallmark & Gift Shop and Amanda Cohen-Bright for being our loyal corporate sponsors.

See you on the trails or restaurants,

Lloyd

In Case Of...

from Loren Little

We volkssporters tend to be an independent and, at least in our own minds, invincible lot.  We head out alone, as couples or as groups with no doubt that we will successfully and safely complete our intended walk, shopping trip or any other outing.  But what if the unthinkable were to happen and we were to not make it to the end of our outing?

Not a problem!  We have our identification documents and insurance/Medicare cards in our wallets/purses; and we may even have ICE (In Case Of Emergency) or "911" numbers identified in our cell phones - all of which are - - securely stored in the trunk of our car which is probably parked somewhere near the start point of our walk.  But who knows where we are, what we drove to the start point or where it is really parked?  Probably no one but us.

Okay, so someone does know where we went, what we drove and where we parked.  And they are able to get to our (remember, securely stored) documents.  What information will they be able to glean from those documents?  Certainly name, address and maybe basic insurance information.  Significant medical conditions and medications being taken?  Allergies that could have severe implications in emergency treatment? Primary Care Physician? Who should be contacted and how to contact them? Maybe, but my guess is that in most cases the answer is "Probably Not."  Some recent events in the life of our club have served to highlight some of our vulnerabilities and how little we really know about each other.

I would urge everyone to devise a document that they will carry with them with any information they would want known early-on in case of an emergency situation in which they were not able to adequately communicate.  I would even suggest that multiple copies be made to maximize the probability of having at least one copy with you at all times.  (We now have copies in our wallets, our hats and our backpacks.)  Hopefully, none of us will ever need this document, but I think it far better to have it and not need it than to be in the hospital ER or ICU with all these questions unanswered.

CHANGES TO CALENDAR

 From Dennis Michele

Hi all - due to the rock slide on I-40 and Biltmore House changing the last day for free tickets from Mar 31 to Mar 21, some of our walk schedule needed to be changed. Please mark your calendars, Mountains to the Sea books, whatever as follows:

March 13 Rutherfordton and delete Knoxville

March 20 Biltmore House.  We will meet at 9:30AM in front of the Visitor and Reception Center to register and get instructions and then drive to house where we'll reconvene in front of the house at 10AM.

March 28  delete Biltmore House

May 22  Knoxville and delete Rutherfordton

BUS TRIP TO SAVANNAH

We gathered at Little's House at about 5:30 and started to load the bus.  When we left at six, the yard looked like a used car lot with cars everywhere.  We started in the dark and watched the sunrise as we drove along.  The first stop was for breakfast and a pit stop in Rock Hill, SC.  The next stop was a rest area on I-26 just before we reached I-95.  Our big red bus then took us to Savannah and dropped us off at the start point for the walks.

We registered, got maps, and walked as a group on one of the walks which took us through the historic area and along the waterfront.  The weather was warm and sunny.  We reassembled at the designated time and went to our motel to check in.  Dinner was discretionary and provided many reports on the local restaurants.

The forecast for Saturday was rain, lots of rain mostly in the afternoon.  The bus trip to the walk on Tybee Island was moved up to the morning.  We drove out there and did the long (at least 12 km) walk in drizzle and light rain.  We ate at a local seafood restaurant and had some great food.  The arrival of 20 some eaters at one time proved to be no problem for the staff, they had very few other customers.  We heard later that walkers who did the walk in the afternoon got trapped on the island by rain and high water.

We returned to the motel, picked up some who did not go to Tybee Island, and returned to the start point.  Some did events and others went sight-seeing, but all got soaked.  Dinner again was left to the individuals desires.

The weather on Sunday was clear and most of the flooded streets downtown had drained.  We broke up into groups depending on the number and lengths of walks that the people wanted to do.  Dinner was the same as before and the bus made a late night run downtown to pick up those who decided to eat there.

On Monday, we loaded our luggage into the bus and headed for Beaufort, SC.  The decision was to walk as a group doing 5 km of the regular event and 5 km of the year round event.  We split up for lunch so as to not overload one restaurant.  We reconvened at the bus and started the long trip home.

Everything went well.  Loren's estimates of times needed for travel, food and reststops, and walking were very accurate so very few adjustments to the schedule were made.

ASHEVILLE AMBLERS BIRTHDAY BASH

From Judy Michele

You are invited to celebrate 30 years of Volkswalking in Western North Carolina!  Come for the day, or make it a weekend. Mark your calendars now.  This is one you do not want to miss.

Saturday, April 24th.  Party central will be at our walk in Holmes Educational Forest (from 2006) southwest of Asheville - between Hendersonville and Brevard.  Wildflowers, talking trees, a tumbling creek, free IVV credit and free birthday cake. See exhibits citing forestry practices used by forest services. Savor fantastic views, the budding trees, the vivid colors of Spring wild flowers, the pleasant sound of babbling brooks, the colorful sights and sounds of migratory birds and the peaceful serenity of a mountain pond. Sturdy walking shoes or boots are advised plus walking stick if you have one.

Savor our brat platters at family prices. The brochure including map and nearby accommodations is available for download now at http://www.amblers.homestead.com/ or we will be mailing them out in March. This walk does not start until 11am, so . . .

Our 2 seasonal walks at DuPont Forest (from 2003 plus more) are just a few miles down the road with spectacular waterfalls, scenic lakes and a covered bridge. Registration and stamping will be available at Holmes, or by mail for completion April 1 - June 30.  Info on these walks is also available on our website or in Mountains to Sea (listed as Brevard/DuPont).  DuPont is very popular and parking limited so we are recommending you go there early in the day.  For the ambitious, walk DuPont early Saturday, come to Holmes for lunch, birthday cake and walk, then do the other DuPont walk early Sunday.  Of course, if you prefer, you can choose substitutions or additions from our 10 YREs within 60 miles of this event.  Whatever your option, we know you will enjoy.  For more info, contact me at jumianc@aol.com or 828-628-4343. See you there.
